God's 26 Guards

Here's a message that will bring you chills.

Have you ever felt the urge to pray for someone and then just put it on a list and said,

"I'll pray for them later?" Or has anyone ever called you and said, "I need you to pray for me, I have this need?"

Read the following story that was sent to me and may it change the way that you think about prayer and also the way you pray. You will be blessed by this....

A missionary on furlough told this true story while visiting his home church in Michigan .

"While serving at a small field hospital in Africa , every two weeks I traveled by bicycle through the jungle to a nearby city for supplies.

This was a journey of two days and required camping overnight at the halfway point.

On one of these journeys, I arrived in the city where I planned to collect money from a bank, purchase medicine, and supplies, and then begin my two-day journey back to the field hospital.

Upon arrival in the city, I observed two men fighting, one of whom had been seriously injured. I treated him for his injuries and at the same time talked to him about the Lord.

I then traveled two days, camping overnight, and arrived home without incident....
Two weeks later I repeated my journey.

Upon arriving in the city, I was approached by the young man I had treated. He told me that he had known I carried money and medicines. He said, "Some friends and I followed you into the jungle, knowing you would camp overnight. We planned to kill you and take your money and drugs. But just as we were about to move into your camp, we saw that you were surrounded by 26 armed guards."
At this, I laughed and said that I was certainly all alone in that jungle campsite.

The young man pressed the point, however, and said, 'No, sir, I was not the only person to see the guards, my friends also saw them, and we all counted them. It was because of those guards that we were afraid and left you alone.'

At this point in the sermon, one of the men in the congregation jumped to his feet and interrupted the missionary and asked if he could tell him the exact day this happened.

The missionary told the congregation the date, and the man who interrupted told him this story:

"On the night of your incident in Africa, it was morning here and I was preparing to go play golf. I was about to start when I felt the urge to pray for you. In fact, the urging of the Lord was so strong, I ca lled men in this church to meet with me here in the sanctuary to pray for you. Would all of those men who met with me on that day stand up?"

The men who had met together to pray that day stood up. The missionary wasn't concerned with who they were, he was too busy counting how many men he saw.

There were 26!

This story is an incredible example of how the Spirit of the Lord moves in behalf of those who love Him. If you ever hear such prodding, go along with it.

Nothing is ever hurt by prayer except the gates of hell. I encourage you to forward this to as many people as you know. If we all take it to heart, we can turn this world toward God once again. As the above true story clearly illustrates, "With God all thing s are possible".

More importantly, how God hears and answers the prayers of the faithful.

After you read this, please pass it on and give God thanks for the beautiful gift of your faith, for the powerful gift of prayer, and for the many miracles He works in your own daily life. Who says God does not move on the earth today?

I asked the Lord to bless you as I prayed for you today.
To guide you and protect you as you go along your way.
His love is always with you, His promises are true, and
when we give Him our cares you know He will see us through.
So when the road you're traveling on seems difficult at best, Just remember I'm here praying, and God will do the rest.

Pass this on to those whom you want God to bless.

A Christmas Story

The old man sat in his gas station on a cold Christmas Eve. He hadn't been anywhere in years since his wife had passed away. He had no decorations, no tree, no lights.

It was just another day to him. He didn't hate Christmas, just couldn't find a reason to celebrate. There were no children in his life. His wife had gone.

He was sitting there looking at the snow that had been falling for the last hour and wondering what it was all about when the door opened up and a homeless man stepped through. Instead of throwing the man out, George, Old George as he was known by his customers, told the man to come in and sit by the space heater and warm up.

"Thank you, but I don't mean to intrude," said the stranger. "I see you're busy.

I'll just go." "Not without something hot in your belly," George said. He turned and opened a wide mouth Thermos and handed it to the stranger. "It ain't much, but it's hot and tasty. Stew. Made it myself. When you're done, there's coffee and it's fresh."

Just at that moment he heard the "ding" of the driveway bell. "Excuse me, be right back," George said. There in the driveway was an old 53 Chevy. Steam was rolling out of the front. The driver was panicked. "Mister, can you help me?" said the driver with a deep Spanish accent. "My wife is with child and my car is broken." George opened the hood. It was bad. The block looked cracked from the cold; the car was dead. "You ain't going in this thing. George said as he turned away.

"But mister. Please help..." The door of the office closed behind George as he went in. George went to the office wall and got the keys to his old truck, and went back outside. He walked around the building and opened the garage, started the truck and drove it around to where the couple was waiting. "Here, take my truck," he said.

"She ain't the best thing you've ever looked at, but she runs real good." George helped put the woman in the truck and watched as it sped off into the night. George turned and walked back inside the office.

"Glad I gave 'em the truck. Their tires were shot, too. That 'ol truck has brand new..." George thought he was talking to the stranger, but the man had gone. The Thermos was on the desk, empty with a used coffee cup beside it. "Well, at least he got something in his belly," George thought.

George went back outside to see if the old Chevy would start. It cranked slowly, but it started. He pulled it into the garage where the truck had been. He thought he would tinker with it for something to do. Christmas Eve meant no customers. He discovered the block hadn't cracked, it was just the bottom hose on the radiator.

"Well, shoot, I can fix this," he said to himself. So he put a new one on. "Those tires ain't gonna get 'em through the winter either." He took the snow treads off of his wife's old Lincoln. They were like new and he wasn't going to drive the car.

As he was working, he heard shots being fired. He ran outside and beside a police car an officer lay on the cold ground. Bleeding from the left shoulder, the officer moaned, "Help me!" George helped the officer inside as he remembered the training he had received in the Army as a medic. He knew the wound needed attention. "Pressure to stop the bleeding," he thought. The uniform company had been there that morning and had left clean shop towels. He used those and duct tape to bind the wound.

"Hey, they say duct tape can fix anything," he said, trying to make the policeman feel at ease. "Something for the pain," George thought. All he had was the pills he used for his back. "These oughta work." He put some water in a cup and gave the policeman the pills. "You hang in there. I'm gonna get you an ambulance." The phone was dead. "Maybe I can get one of your buddies on that there talk box out in your car."

He went out only to find that a bullet had gone into the dashboard destroying the two-way radio. He went back in to find the policeman sitting up. "Thanks," said the officer. "You could've left me out there. The guy that shot me is still in the area."

George sat down beside him. "I would never leave an injured man in the Army and I ain't gonna leave you." George pulled back the bandage to check for bleeding. "Looks worse than it is. Bullet passed right through ya. Good thing it missed the important stuff though. I think with time you're gonna be right as rain." George got up and poured a cup of coffee.. "How do you take it?" he asked. "None for me," said the officer. "Oh, yer gonna drink this. Best in the city. Too bad I ain't got no donuts."

The officer laughed and winced at the same time. The front door of the office flew open. In burst a young man with a gun. "Give me all your cash! Do it now!" the young man yelled. His hand was shaking and George could tell that he had never done anything like this before.

"That's the guy that shot me!" exclaimed the officer. "Son, why are you doing this?"
asked George. You need to put the cannon away. Somebody else might get hurt." The young man was confused. "Shut up old man, or I'll shoot you, too. Now give me the cash!" The cop was reaching for his gun. "Put that thing away," George said to the cop. "We got one too many in here now." He turned his attention to the young man.

"Son, it's Christmas Eve. If you need the money, well then, here. It ain't much but it's all I got. Now put that pea shooter away." George pulled $150 out of his pocket and handed it to the young man, reaching for the barrel of the gun at the same time.

The young man released his grip on the gun, fell to his knees and began to cry. "I'm not very good at this am I? All I wanted was to buy something for my wife and son," he went on. "I've lost my job. My rent is due. My car got repossessed last week..."

George handed the gun to the cop. "Son, we all get in a bit of squeeze now and then.
The road gets hard sometimes, but we make it through the best we can." He got the young man to his feet, and sat him down on a chair across from the cop. "Sometimes we do stupid things." George handed the young man a cup of coffee. "Being stupid is one of the things that makes us human. Comin' in here with a gun ain't the answer.
Now sit there and get warm and we'll sort this thing out."

The young man had stopped crying. He looked over to the cop. "Sorry I shot you. It just went off. I'm sorry, officer." "Shut up and drink your coffee," the cop said.

George could hear the sounds of sirens outside. A police car and an ambulance skidded to a halt. Two cops came through the door, guns drawn.

"Chuck! You ok?" one of the cops asked the wounded officer.

"Not bad for a guy who took a bullet. How did you find me?"

"GPS locator in the car. Best thing since sliced bread. Who did this?" the other cop asked as he approached the young man. Chuck answered him, "I don't know. The guy ran off into the dark. Just dropped his gun and ran." George and the young man both looked puzzled at each other. "That guy work here?" the wounded cop continued. "Yep," George said. "Just hired him this morning. Boy lost his job."

The paramedics came in and loaded Chuck onto the stretcher.

The young man leaned over the wounded cop and whispered, "Why?" Chuck just said, "Merry Christmas, boy. And you too, George, and thanks for everything."

"Well, looks like you got one doozy of a break there. That ought to solve some of your problems."

George went into the back room and came out with a box. He pulled out a ring box. "Here you go. Something for the little woman. I don't think Martha would mind. She said it would come in handy some day."

The young man looked inside to see the biggest diamond ring he ever saw. "I can't take this," said the young man. "It means something to you."

"And now it means something to you," replied George. "I got my memories. That's all I need."

George reached into the box again. An airplane, a car and a truck appeared next. They were toys that the oil company had left for him to sell. "Here's something for that little man of yours."

The young man began to cry again as he handed back the $150 that the old man had handed him earlier.

"And what are you supposed to buy Christmas dinner with? You keep that too," George said. "Now git home to your family."

The young man turned with tears streaming down his face. "I'll be here in the morning for work, if that job offer is still good."

"Nope. I'm closed Christmas day," George said. "See ya the day after."

George turned around to find that the stranger had returned. "Where'd you come from? I thought you left?"

"I have been here. I have always been here," said the stranger. "You say you don't celebrate Christmas. Why?"

"Well, after my wife passed away I just couldn't see what all the bother was. puttin' up a tree and all seemed a waste of a good pine tree. Bakin' cookies like I used to with Martha just wasn't the same by myself and besides I was getting a little chubby."

The stranger put his hand on George's shoulder. "But you do celebrate the holiday, George. You gave me food and drink and warmed me when I was cold and hungry. The woman with child will bear a son and he will become a great doctor. The policeman you helped will go on to save 19 people from being killed by terrorists. The young man who tried to rob you will make you a rich man and not take any for himself. That is the spirit of the season and you keep it as good as any man."

George was taken aback by all this stranger had said. "And how do you know all this?" asked the old man.

"Trust me, George. I have the inside track on this sort of thing. And when your days are done you will be with Martha again."

The stranger moved toward the door.

"If you will excuse me, George, I have to go now. I have to go home where there is a big celebration planned."

George watched as the old leather jacket and the torn pants that the stranger was wearing turned into a white robe.

A golden light began to fill the room. "You see, George... it's my birthday. Merry Christmas."

George fell to his knees and replied, "Happy Birthday, Lord."

Barack Obama was born in the United States

Smears claiming Barack Obama doesn’t have a birth certificate aren’t actually about that piece of paper — they’re about manipulating people into thinking Barack is not an American citizen.

The truth is, Barack Obama was born in the state of Hawaii in 1961, a native citizen of the United States of America.

(Click on the title of this blog and see the birth certificate.)

Hawaii became the 50th state of the Union on August 21, 1959.

Obama was born August 4, 1961.

Still don't believe it?

Vote with your conscience

People (among them is a Roman Catholic bishop) have been saying that if you vote for candidate A rather than candidate B you will go to hell. The people who are saying this are irresponsible and just plain wrong. As a Catholic Christian I am insulted by these statements, especially coming from a church leader. They seem to have forgotten what scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church says.

God has asked us to listen to our conscience. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church says: Section 1782 -- Man has the right to act in conscience and in freedom so as personally to make moral decisions. “He must not be forced to act contrary to his conscience. Nor must he be prevented from acting according to his conscience ...” So for a religious leader or other lay person to say that I will go to hell for voting for candidate A is preventing and attempting to force me from acting according to my conscience, by the use of the threat of hell. By doing that, according to the Catholic Church, these very people are committing a sin. So who is more sinful? Me for acting according to my conscience or them for preventing me from voting my conscience. I'll leave the final judgment to God, for those who judge others will be judged just as harshly by God.

The Catechism and scripture has much more to say about conscience decisions, the most important thing is that we are morally obligated to vote, however when you vote, vote with your conscience, not someone else's.

Hoax! "This will change your retirement" e-mail

Click on the title of this blog and it will take you to FactCheck.org for the real facts.

Peace! C

This is the reply I got from my friend who works on the campaign. C-

It is completely fabricated: http://fightthesmears.com/articles/9/obamaandtaxes.

This information is being circulated in many anonymous e-mails. This is what the non-partisan organization FactCheck.org said about it: “This widely distributed message is so full of misinformation that we find it impossible to believe that it is the result of simple ignorance or carelessness on the part of the writer. Almost nothing it says about Obama's tax proposals is true. We conclude that this deception is deliberate.”

Below is the fabricated email, if you wanted to read it.

THIS WILL CHANGE YOUR RETIREMENT

For those among you who have more money than you will ever need, save your time and delete this email.

For the rest of us who are still working with mortgages, children and grandchildren or retired living on a pension and or Social Security perhaps you will take a couple of minutes to read the proposed changes in the American tax system.

Sharing this email with others can make a difference on November 4, 2008; for our citizens and our country.

INTERESTING DATA JUST RECEIVED ON TAXES

This is something you should be aware of so you don't get blind-sided. This is really going to catch a lot of families off guard. It should make you worry.

Proposed changes in taxes after 2008 General election:

CAPITAL GAINS TAX

MCCAIN

0% on home sales up to $500,000 per home (couples) McCain does not propose any change in existing home sales income tax.

OBAMA

28% on profit from ALL home sales

How does this affect you? If you sell your home and make a profit, you will pay 28% of your gain on taxes. If you are heading toward retirement and would like to down-size your home or move into a retirement community, 28% of the money you make from your home will go to taxes. This proposal will adversely affect the elderly who are counting on the income from their homes as part of their retirement income.

DIVIDEND TAX

MCCAIN 15% (no change)

OBAMA 39.6%

How will this affect you? If you have any money invested in stock market, IRA, mutual funds, college funds, life insurance, retirement accounts, or anything that pays or reinvests dividends, you will now be paying nearly 40% of the money earned on taxes if Obama become president. The experts predict that higher tax rates on dividends and capital gains would crash the stock market yet do absolutely nothing to cut the deficit.

INCOME TAX (OBAMA CLAIMS NO INCREASE IN TAXES….. AFTER BUSH CUTS ARE ELIMINATED!)

MCCAIN (no changes)

Single making 30K - tax $4,500

Single making 50K - tax $12,500

Single making 75K - tax $18,750

Married making 60K- tax $9,000

Married making 75K - tax $18,750

Married making 125K - tax $31,250

OBAMA

(Reversion to pre-Bush tax cuts)

Single making 30K - tax $8,400

Single making 50K - tax $14,000

Single making 75K - tax $23,250

Married making 60K - tax $16,800

Married making 75K - tax $21,000

Married making 125K - tax $38,750

Under Obama your taxes will more than double! How does this affect you? No explanation needed. This is pretty straight forward.

INHERITANCE TAX

MCCAIN 0% (No change, Bush repealed this tax)

OBAMA Restore the inheritance tax

How does this affect you? Many families have lost businesses, farms and ranches, and homes that have been in their families for generations because they could not afford the inheritance tax. Those willing their assets to loved ones will not only lose them to these taxes.

NEW TAXES BEING PROPOSED BY OBAMA

* New government taxes proposed on homes that are more than 2400 square feet

* New gasoline taxes (as if gas weren't high enough already)

* New taxes on natural resources consumption (heating gas, water, electricity)

* New taxes on retirement accounts and last but not least....

* New taxes to pay for socialized medicine so we can receive the same level of medical care as other third-world countries!!!

I sent an email to a friend of mine who is very active in the Obama campaign and suggested that the YouTube and other videos should be closed captioned for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired. He forwarded my suggestion to the Media aspect of the campaign and now, one week later, they did it!

Home, Hearth and Family

Well, my trip to LA is winding down and I am getting ready to head back to Arcata tomorrow. While I am excited to be heading home to a new semester of classes and to J, I am also sad at leaving my parents and my younger brothers. It has been so nice to be home. Although it has been busy, doctors appointments and visiting with a hand full of friends, it has been nice sitting down and having dinner at a table with the family and talking.

Lets see, whom have I seen? I have seen my friend Kevin, he told me how he met his wife Joanna and after 2 weeks they decided to get married, six months later. Cool story, I do not think I could of done that though. I got the chance to chat with my friend JT (Kevin's brother), Rick and John (Kevin and JT's dad) while visiting with Kevin. I saw my friends from my summer job in 2007 at Retirement Housing Foundation. Please keep Leo in your prayers he had an accident on Friday and had surgery yesterday. My friend Damein and Claudia from St. James choir (along with several others) and Sherie (also from St. James).

Doctors, hum, yes...my Chiropractor Dr. Kevin Miller, my dentist, and my ENT Dr. Brackmann at the House Ear Clinic. I also got my hair cut and my eye brows done. I feel so unhairy now!

It has been very humid here and hot. Apparently it rained the other night, of course I do not remember that!

What else happened? Oh yes, the family gathering! It did NOT take place in the valley (Thank God!), it took place here at my parents. It was really nice seeing everyone. So many of the cousins have married and now have children. It was quite interesting. We now have a ton of grilled vegetables and chicken, so much we are not sure what to do with it! Even Marlowe is getting a bit sick of chicken. It was fun.

Here are some pictures:

Beauty and the Beast

I love this story, the original is an incredible love story, and CBS made me very happy by adding the 1987 TV series to their TV Classic online (click the title above and it will take you to it). It stars Linda Hamilton and Ron Pearlman and it is a wonderfully written and performed show (some of you may recognize various actors that appear as regulars, hint Jay Acovone of SG1).

My favorite version was a book given to me as a child by my father.

I still have it and still enjoy reading it, along with looking at the incredible illustrations.

Like the original fairy tale, the TV version is a love story, one that transcends time and space. Beauty is love and that beauty/love is within each of us. When one truly looks into someone else's heart, they can see the beauty of that person, the love that each of us is capable of, what each of us desires and needs, the love and beauty of God.

I see it now.

Peace and love, C-

In Redondo....

Hi all!

Well, made it LA round 3:30ish yesterday. Every time I come here, I swear traffic is worse than it was the last time! It took me an hour to get from Sherman Oaks to the 10 freeway. It took another 20 minutes to get to Culver Blvd so I could get off the stupid 405 and take side streets. It took me about 20 minutes to get from Culver City to Redondo via the side streets.

By the way it is bloody hot and humid here! I keep forgetting that until I re-enter the area. I do have to say though the sea breeze is really nice. Yes, it is nice to be home again.

I found out that will be a family gathering of the Armenian clan next weekend...in the valley...okay, I'll repeat that....in the VALLEY, in the middle of SUMMER! oh well, you will find me indoors by the AC. He he. Despite that, it will be nice to see everyone again.

Okay, enough complaining by me. I do look forward to seeing the rest of my family and friends.

Peace! C

On the road and J

Hi Everyone!

Well, I am here in the Bay Area visiting with my Aunt and Uncle on my way to LA. I got about 11 hours sleep last night so I am awake now. I think tomorrow's drive to LA will be better, boring, but better. It is amazing that the further south I go the more golden brown everything is. Not to say that we do not see that in the Arcata area, the grass is golden brown, but there are purple, yellow, and white flowers, green trees and yes the California Golden Poppies as well. So there is color.

Of course I must admit for the first time I forgot to pack several items. Mainly my cell phone charger! Okay, I admit J is very distracting, but in a good way. :-) However, I do have my charger for my car, so I am good. In addition the closer I get to LA the longer my cell battery stays charged. So, always a good thing being home.

Speaking of J. That is him in my about me profile picture. Isn't he cute! Okay, enough of that. He really is a great guy. He is funny, witty, sarcastic sense of humor (right up my alley!), kind, smart, gentle and Catholic! Okay, how did we meet? Well, at the bus stop! I was sitting there waiting for the bus and reading, when he comes up and asks of the bus had come yet. Completely startled, (I was not expecting anyone to come up to bus in the middle of the afternoon during the height of summer vacation), I had to ask him to repeat the question. Anyway, his mom was with him (she was out visiting her eldest child), she also wanted to make sure that he could find his way to campus and other motherly intentions (did I mention? J. is blind, well, he can tell the difference between a tree and a human being, just no details, he can see some colors as well).

Well, we got to campus and I pointed out where the Student Disability Center was and preceded to go my way, when our beloved Father decided to officially turn my neat, ordered, comfortable life upside down! He told me to give J my number. I hesitated and was about to keep walking when he (spiritually) smacked me in the back of my head and firmly repeated himself. Okay, obviously I could not ignore that, so I turned around went back to J and asked him if he would like to have my number in case he had any questions, etc. He was startled, but accepted, his mother seemed to be relieved that he would be able to contact someone. I walked on towards my destination and didn't think about it again. Well, ran into them on the bus back home...needless to say...I was wondering what God was up to. I got my first inkling a week later.

J called me about a week later and we started chatting. I have no idea how the conversation started, but it did. I was amazed by how much we had in common and he had me laughing! We hung up and the idiot I was, I forgot to get his number. It was right before the 4th of July and I realized I could of invited him to the Newman Center 4th of July Celebration. So I was hoping he would call again. But the 4th sadly came and went and no call.

He did call again and we chatted, and of course I forgot to get his number again! Happily I did know which apartment complex he lived in, just not which building or apartment. So I started staking out the place, well not really. I would take the long route to the store which forced me to go by his complex. One day a gentleman from the front complex was out front, so I asked him if he knew where J lived. He pointed to the back complex and said it was one of those apartments. So the next day I knocked on 3 of the 4 (not the one he was in!) and no answer. So I came back a couple days later and got an answer from the one below him and she directed me upstairs. I knocked, but no answer. So I figured I would try again the next day. Still no answer, I figured he might be out, so I went back about an hour later, still no answer. In the mean time I was waiting for my friend Amanda to come over and we were going to go on a hike, so as we were heading, there we stopped by and tried again. this time he answered. My answer was given....he is a night owl. He was deep asleep every time I went by! So, this time I got his number. Whew! My heart was beating so fast. Things just went from there.

On 29 July 2008, he asked me to be his girlfriend. My prayer is that God will guide us and give us the wisdom we need to work on this relationship.

I think this song my Debbie Gibson says it all for me:

Lost in Your Eyes

Heart

There comes a point in your life when you realize

who never did,
who won't anymore................

Give this heart to everyone you don't want to lose in '08
including me, if you care.

A New Strategy for a New World

Searching for Resources

So far my search has come up with the CA State Vocational Resource. Basically it is for those with disabilities that have difficulty finding a job. They assist by helping to make a plan to get what ever training, education that is needed and then to assist in getting a job and to help get what ever resources one will need to keep the job. I went to their mandatory introduction meeting and was uncertain if it would be helpful. I meet with a counselor last week. What was very interesting is that the counselor said that I do qualify for resources. So according the State Government I am disabled. So my moral dilemma of checking off that box on various paper work, is now gone and I am relived. Anyway, they are going to assist me in getting my hearing aids assessed to determine if they are nor longer adequate. If possible help get new ones.

My next step is to try to apply for medi-cal. I will keep you posted on that avenue of recourse.

I am also looking in the possiblity of a hearing dog. I am uncertain if this work, but I will never know until I investigate the option. I personally feel it would be quite helpful. Over this past year and a half of living on my own I have discoverd that I miss many sounds, such as the phone ringing, knocking on the door, timer going off, people calling my name, just to name a few things. A service dog would assist me by simply nudging me and looking towards the direction of the sound. There are many places, using a variety of techniques in training as well as dogs. According to some web-sites there is a wait anywhere between 2 to 5 years. The wait it to make the best match between the person and the dog. Temperments are every thing in a working relationship. I will keep you posted on this adventure as well.

That is it for now.

Peace!

Response to a Comment on my hearing loss

Anonymous Paula said...

How did you lose your hearing, by the way?

I was born with my hearing loss. It is a combination of a Conductive Hearing Loss and a Sensorineural Hearing Loss, other wise known as a Mixed Hearing Loss. Basically I have middle ear bone damage and nerve damage. For further information you can go to the House Ear Clinic at http://www.houseearclinic.com/hearingloss.htm for more information. I also think I have a touch of Central Auditory Processing Disorder which you can find on this same page.

Thanks for asking Paula!

Life as an HOH/HI: a painful childhood memory

I have so many memories from my childhood as a main streamed HOH, sadly many are not happy. I want to say in NO way do I blame my parents or my teachers. My father did everything humanly possible he could do and did what he felt was the right thing for me. The blame goes squarely on the shoulders of my tormentors and to extension their parents (in my opinion, who were not as involved in their child's life as they should of been).

It was Jr. High, I think I was going to lunch and I stopped by to say hello my speech therapist (I spent K-8 going to one). There was a group of girls behind me, honestly I don't think I even knew them! While I was standing in the doorway to her office, these girls passed by and they were talking to themselves, I glanced at them and one of the girls stared at me over her shoulder (rather rudely if I recall correctly). My speech therapist came up to me and asked if I heard them calling my name and I said no. That explained the rude look. Obviously this is not one of my tormented stories, but you get the idea of my sense of isolation. Because I didn't or couldn't hear someone, people thought I was rude and ignoring them!

I never hide my HI, but I did not talk about it either, mostly because I didn't know what to say. Even now as an adult I don't hide it nor talk about it.

Here is a torment story. It was about third grade, Chris and I had just returned from Washington State (that is a long story in itself and for another time). My parents were getting a divorce, I was once again going to a new school and knew no one. There was this girl that thought it would be funny to scream in my ear. Every day, any time of the day, usually at recess or after school out on the side walk. Not only would she scream in my ear, but she would also pinch me and run off laughing. Needless to say it was quite painful to my ear and my self-esteem was at its lowest. Thankfully, I was able to go to my father (he always made me feel like I could) and the girl got in trouble and she never did it again.

I certainly do not remember her name now, nor what she looked like. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I knew her before she started the torment. Anyone have any thoughts on this phenomenon of not knowing the person before the torment starts?

Anyway, enough for now.

Peace!

Life as a HOH/HI: Part I

What on earth is HOH and HI you ask? I just learned these terms this past weekend:

HOH - Hard of Hearing
HI is Hearing Impaired.

I am sure many of you are wondering what brought this topic up since I rarely discuss my hearing loss and its effects in my life. As a matter of fact 95% of you forgot I am hard of hearing! Not that I want anyone to dwell on it. I certainly do not, especially since my disability is part of who I am. So why dwell? What brought this topic to the front of my thoughts is the fact that my hearing aids are over 15 years old and have started to fall apart (literally). Due to this sad event of aging, I started researching "free hearing aids". Honestly, I simply can not afford new aids, not now nor in the past. I have run across a few resources that are provided by the state and federal governments. I am uncertain as to whether I qualify for anything, however I thought that I would try. Before I get to that, I thought I would share with you my test results from my hearing test from July 2007 (I have my annual test in August, but this will give you the basic idea).

This chart will help to understand where the decibel (the intensity or loudness of the sound) lands in relation to hearing loss:

0 dB - 20 dB ....... normal hearing
20 dB - 40 dB ..... mild hearing loss
40 dB - 55 dB ..... moderate hearing loss
55 dB - 70 dB ..... moderately severe hearing loss
70 dB - 90 dB ..... severe hearing loss
over 90 dB....profound hearing loss

My average decibel (dB) was recorded as 39dB. So for my right ear I have a mild to moderate hearing loss. However, the frequency (how low or high a sound or pitch is) which is measured in Hertz, are different. 250 is low and 6000 is high - this really has to do with understanding human speech.

250 Hz: 20 dB (border line normal to mild hearing loss)
500 Hz: 25 dB (mild loss)
1000 Hz: 35 dB (mild loss)
2000 Hz: 40 dB (moderate loss)
3000 Hz: 55 dB (border line moderate to moderately severe)
4000 Hz: 65 dB (moderately severe)
6000 Hz: 80 dB (severe loss)

What this means is the higher the pitch; the less I hear.

Now for my left ear: My average dB is 79 which is a severe hearing loss. (That is why I always try to be on your left side, so I can hear you out of my right ear!). The frequency is:

250 Hz: 30 dB (mild hearing loss)
500 Hz: 40 dB (moderate loss)
1000 Hz: 55 dB (border line moderate to moderately severe)
2000 Hz: 110 dB (profound loss)
3000 Hz: 110 dB (profound loss)
4000 Hz: 110 dB (profound loss)
6000 Hz: 95 dB (profound loss)

I can only hear low sounds such as a rumbling sound. If someone tries to speak in my left ear, I get enough vibration to know that there is a sound, however, I can not understand or make out what that sound is. For more information on Audiograms you can check out Audiology Awareness at http://www.audiologyawareness.com/hearinfo_audiogramread.asp.

The good news is that my hearing has not changed since my first test at the House Ear Clinic in Los Angeles in 1980 - http://www.houseearclinic.com. I have been blessed with the best doctor in the world (no joke here - he is the top of his field in the world), Derald E. Brackmann, M.D. has been my doctor for 28 years. Wow! He knew me throughout my timid childhood, my gawky teenage years (now that is frightening) and my borderline early adult life (I do not think I have entirely grown up yet...now I digress).

I think I will end this discussion here for the evening. I will continue my thoughts later, however, for now if you have any questions, etc. please ask them!

Peace!
